HII's Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, designing, building, and refueling U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines.
Riggers provide the kinetic energy of the shipbuilding business, operating cranes, forklifts, and tug boats to lift, manipulate, and set ship components into place. They must calculate weight, center of gravity, and lift points, and select the most appropriate gear for the task. Riggers also erect, maintain, and dismantle scaffolding, and install and maintain ventilation equipment.
