Aptus is seeking a Direct Support Professional to work with individuals with complex needs, including those with dual diagnosis mental health disorders. The ideal candidate will be passionate about working with people with disabilities, creative, and able to build relationships. They will be responsible for establishing respectful relationships, supporting individuals to develop decision-making skills, and promoting their dignity and well-being.
Requirements
- Relevant Degree, SSW, DSW, CYC or ECE Diploma or equivalent education and/or a minimum of two years’ experience working with people who have an intellectual disability
- Ability to support behavioural needs and protocols
- Previous experience supporting people who have mental health diagnosis and dealing with high anxiety situations
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
- Ability to follow and create Support Plans
- Ability to relate to the specific support needs of the people supported at assigned location
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Good communication skills including written and verbal
- Ability to maintain accurate documentation and some experience scheduling
- Current First Aid, CPR and Non-violent Crisis Intervention certificates
- Proven use of CPI strategies including verbal de-escalation
- Training in dispensing medications
- Valid driver’s licence (G or G2)
- Vulnerable Sector Screening dated within the last 3 months
- Intermediate computer skills (Word, Excel, email, access the Internet)
- Qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
- Must be able to operate and navigate a shuttle van.
- Must be able to move, lift or push objects up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to lift, bend, reach above the head, kneel, crouch, and/or stretch during shifts up to 8 hours long.
- Capable of moving up and down stairs.
