The Animal Care Professional is responsible for the daily husbandry activities of the animal collection in their department, presenting a positive example for fellow employees, and participating in AZA or AAZA activities.
Requirements
- Displays and demonstrates basic biology, behaviors, and husbandry of animals in their department
- Cleans and maintains animal holdings, including use of chemical agents and special tools
- Identifies, recognizes, and reports abnormal behavior of animals in their department
- Monitors weather-related needs for animals in their department and shelters animals appropriately
- Develops good communication with Zoological Manager and Curator
- Uses classical and operant conditioning with animals in their department
- Utilizes and documents environmental enrichment program
- Creates new enrichment ideas and items for department repertoire
- Maintains and updates animal record keeping systems within the department
- Responsible for capturing, crating, and transferring animals using appropriate restraint and handling techniques
- Prepares and presents Public Animal Talks to Zoo visitors and guests
- Sets a positive example for fellow employees and presents themselves in a professional manner
- Actively participates in AZA or AAZA activities
- Maintains highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures
- Uses proper techniques in shifting animals on their assigned routine
- Identifies, documents, and properly communicates any animal medical problems to Zoological Manager and Veterinary staff
- Responsible for capturing, crating, and transferring animals using appropriate restraint and handling techniques designed to put the least amount of stress on the animal
