Deaf Mentor

Lutheran Social Service MN is seeking a Deaf Mentor to help increase a family's ability to communicate with their deaf child through the use of sign language. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a related field, 1-2 years of experience working with children and their families, and fluency in American Sign Language.

Requirements

• Bachelor Degree in social work, psychology, counseling, early childhood education, sign language, linguistics, or related human services field
• 1 to 2 years of experience working with children and their families
• Be either Deaf or Hard of Hearing
• Ability to communicate fluently in American Sign Language
• Must be bi-lingual in English and ASL
• Must have a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings
• Ability to communicate effectively with parents who are hearing
• Knowledge of the technology available to assist with effective communication with families
• Ability to interact and implement activities with a variety of children and adults
• Ability to interact with and develop rapport with a variety of parents and professionals
• Ability to be unbiased, open-minded and supportive of family decisions
• Ability and access to appropriate computer technology
• Demonstrated ability of skills in Microsoft Office
• Able to travel to homes or other designated sites
• Knowledge of and participation in Deaf Community activities
