Staff Data Engineer

PayPal is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to design and implement data systems to support business needs. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience and a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience. The role involves driving best practices in data engineering, ensuring data quality, and mentoring junior engineers.

Requirements

• 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience
• Expert-level SQL skills
• Extensive experience with both batch processing (Spark, Dataproc) and real-time/streaming systems (Kafka, Pub/Sub, Dataflow)
• Proven track record building low-latency data systems that solve time-sensitive business problems
• Deep hands-on proficiency with Cloud data services (BigQuery, Bigtable, Dataproc, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub)
• Strong Python programming skills with focus on performance and scalability
• Experience with workflow orchestration at scale (Airflow, UC4, or similar)
• Strong understanding of data modeling, schema design, data warehouse architecture, and data lake patterns
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and DevOps practices
• Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills for complex distributed data systems
• Demonstrated ability to ramp up quickly and deliver in fast-paced environments
