This position will work in the Innovation Hall Maker Space to provide project support, supervision, and direct instruction to students in the use of electronic and computer instrumentation and equipment to make and test prototypes. This position will help students develop designs and translate ideas into real parts using resources in the Maker Space and experiential learning areas.
Requirements
- Serve as a point of contact for users of the Innovation Hall Maker Space
- Provide direct instruction to student users on the safe usage of electronic and computer instrumentation and equipment
- Serve as a subject matter consultant for electrical and computer engineering projects for students in EPICS, VIP, Capstone or elsewhere
- Train and assist Teaching Assistants in the proper use of electronic tools and test equipment
- Coordinate with courses to ensure all course needs are met with the limitations of timing, space, and equipment
- Review student designs to be produced
- Work with students to understand how circuits, components, and assemblies function
- Advise students on optimal methods, materials, and manufacturing processes for creating said components
- Ensure a safe working environment in the manufacturing spaces
- Foster a culture of safety and learning to ensure all users have a positive learning experience
- Design and develop shop safety policies and procedures to ensure the safe operation in the manufacturing spaces and assist with proper training procedures for student employees
- Conduct post incident reviews for all safety incidents or equipment failures to identify root causes
- Develop proposals to address root cause problems to increase the overall level of safety for users of the facilities and improve equipment availability
- Implement the Hazard Communication and Safety program for the manufacturing spaces, and educate students on dealing with hazardous materials
- Ensure all required OSHA documentation and training is complete and up to date
- Maintain electronics prototyping inventory and coordinate the ordering of consumables each semester for assigned instructional making spaces
- Assist in the maintenance of the equipment in the manufacturing space
- Design, develop, and maintain outreach training materials to better prepare students prior to using the manufacturing spaces facilities
- Evaluate student knowledge and weaknesses when using them
- Use this information to create and deliver instructional workshops to better prepare students to use the manufacturing space
- Complete continuing education activities to improve knowledge of the materials and processes and how to effectively teach safe making methods
- Design, Develop and maintain outreach materials in coordination with EPICS and VIP to engage students within these courses and set expectations around their use of the manufacturing lab space
