The Medical Director of VITAS fulfills two primary functions: medical direction of the care and treatment of patients and their families, and education of practicing physicians and others on the hospice program and its potential benefits.
Requirements
- Knowledge of the principles and practice of primary medical care
- Knowledge of palliative care and symptom management
- Ability to work collaboratively with patients' attending physicians and hospice employees and volunteers
- Membership in good standing on the medical staff of an accredited hospital
- Medical malpractice and liability insurance
- Positive recommendation from corporate medical officer
- License to practice medicine in the state
- Board certification in a medical specialty dealing with care of the terminally ill
