Software Engineer, Search & Discovery Platform

Join Whatnot as a Software Engineer and help shape the Discovery Platform, a scalable and personalized system for real-time discovery and search. You'll work closely with product engineers, machine learning teams, and other cross-functional teams to design and build a world-class discovery experience. We value autonomy, growth mindset, and high-impact drive. In this role, you'll build scalable backend systems, integrate retrieval, ranking, and real-time processing, and work on extreme-scale solutions while coordinating with other teams.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Software Engineering, or related field
• Deep experience with machine learning fields (Recommendations, Content Understanding, Search)
• Expertise in designing and building scalable and maintainable backend systems
• Firm grasp of visualization tools (DataDog, Grafana)
• Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Google Cloud) and managed services
• Concurrent programming patterns and optimizations/profiling/observability
• Experience managing cloud technologies and infrastructure-as-code approaches
• Proficiency in at least one server-side programming language (Python)
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
