Athenian Wilderness Experience Instructor (Summer 2026)

The Athenian School is seeking a temporary AWE Instructor for its Wilderness Experience program. The instructor will lead a 26-day backpacking course with rock climbing, solo, and possible independent student travel components. They will work with students aged 15-18, teaching them technical outdoor living skills and creating inclusive spaces.

Requirements

• Current certification as a Wilderness First Responder
• Prior professional experience facilitating team development and managing risk for teens on outdoor education trips
• Experience teaching navigation with paper topographic maps, safe portable stove operations, packing systems, and tarp shelter set up
• Ability to lead differentiated learning experiences and maintain flexibility and a solution-oriented mindset
• Commitment to democracy, justice, equity, inclusion, service, and environmental stewardship
