Tax Manager

Check is hiring a Tax Manager to lead tax operations and shape systems, team, and standards for payroll compliance and accuracy. The role requires 7+ years of experience in leading operations or compliance teams in technology, fintech, or a rapidly scaling startup, with payroll or tax experience being a plus. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in building systems and teams, with a focus on people management, execution quality, and operational ownership.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in leading operations or compliance teams in technology, fintech, or a rapidly scaling startup
• Familiarity with multi-jurisdiction payroll tax filing (federal, state, and local)
• Demonstrated ability to lead both FTEs and contractors in a fast-moving, high-volume operational environment
• Strong judgment in escalation handling
• Experience with payroll platforms or tax software; comfort with technical tooling and data is a plus
• Curiosity about and comfort using AI tools to improve workflows, identify patterns, and drive operational efficiency
