The Lieutenant - VUPS position is a leadership role within the Vanderbilt University Public Safety department, responsible for managing a unit or shift, supervising personnel, and ensuring the delivery of police services that are fair and impartial. The position requires a certified police officer with prior law enforcement experience, a bachelor's degree, and the ability to remain calm and objective in stressful situations. The Lieutenant will coordinate resources and information related to emergency preparedness, crime prevention, and special events, and will be responsible for supervising personnel, evaluating their work, and making sound decisions quickly based on facts presented. The position requires excellent customer service skills, demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, and the ability to handle a wide range of assignments with relative independence and limited direction.
Requirements
- High School Education or G.E.D required
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education is preferred
- Certified police officer meeting all the requirements for P.O.S.T. certification in Tennessee, or be eligible for certification immediately upon hire, as required
- Two (2) years as a Sergeant within an accredited law enforcement agency is required
- The ability to remain calm and objective throughout stressful and unpleasant situations is required
- Excellent customer service skills necessary
- Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills necessary
- Demonstrated public speaking skills necessary
- Demonstrated self-restraint in challenging and/or difficult situations necessary
- Demonstrated problem solving skills necessary
