Direct Support Professional (DSP) is a role that involves supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities. The role requires a high level of emotional support, patience, and tolerance while building positive relationships. The DSP will assist individuals in meeting their personal goals, engage in respectful communications, and facilitate activities that provide social capital and connections to the community.

- Responsible for the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals
- Ensures health, wellness, and safety by providing appropriate supervision and managing crisis situations
- Provides support in a variety of settings and in accordance with each person's individualized service and behavior support plans
- Maintains a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment
- Utilizes safe and appropriate handling procedures and infection control protocols
- Assists with a variety of tasks for individuals, including personal care and activities of daily living
- Ensures medication is administered as prescribed
- Teaches and develops skills
- Supports person-centered advocacy
- Assists in communication, self-expression, and resolving disputes amongst individuals
- Facilitates ethical decision-making
- Provides supervision and/or plans and prepares balanced meals and snacks for individuals
- Transports and escorts individuals on recreational activities, medical appointments, and other outings
- Assists individuals with making purchases and safeguarding personal allowance funds
- Develops an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for person-specific needs
- Implements Behavior Support Plan as written by Behavior Intervention Specialist
- Collects, records, and summarizes data on individuals' observable behavior
- Observes and reports any changes in behavior or other signs and symptoms to clinical and/or leadership team
- Serves as a member of a highly effective team and provides feedback and communicates programmatic needs to members of the team
- Completes and maintains all necessary trainings and certifications
- Reviews communication logs daily and makes entries of events, progress notes, services, and/or information
